Space Traveler Reveals Depression After Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The group of women also featured leaders in various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a Amazon founder.
